#HappyHour: A Guide to a Blissful Life

While I love to blog about the fun things in life (read: cocktails and cosmetics), I think there are other essentials worth talking about.

I have a generally sunny disposition and try to take an enthusiastic, optimistic approach to life. Guilty. People often ask me what I’m smiling about or how I manage to “stay so happy all the time.” I usually joke and blame it on all the caffeine or my Disney princess training. But the truth is, it’s something I work at every single day. A few years ago, right around the time I launched Martinis and Mascara, I set out on a soul-searching mission and decided to put my happiness first, to not let anyone or anything else control it, despite other obstacles I was facing at the time. And it’s not always easy.

I’m well aware that life isn’t always sunshine and lollipops (and martinis and mascara).  There are endless elements in this world attempting to drag you down. That’s why I find self care, emotional health maintenance, and attending to your personal well-being of utmost importance. I think it is necessary to get your mind right and to choose happiness. To chase it, to create it, to cherish it, and to take charge of it. And I want you to do it with me.

I believe that your happy hours are just as important as your happy hours.

And so, I’m introducing a new recurring feature on the blog – #HappyHour. I’ll be sharing advice, support, thought-starters, ideas, and inspiration to guide you on the path to your most blissful life. It’s something I practice in my own life every day on my personal mission to harness happiness and never let it go. If you are ready to create your happiest selves, I invite you to join me at #HappyHour. We can do this together! I’ve been wanting to write this for a while now and couldn’t think of a better time to debut this new feature than on this International Day of Happiness.

Cheers to martinis, mascara, and the pursuit of happiness! See you at the next #HappyHour! 😉

7 Beauty Apps You Need to Download

I think the marriage of beauty and digital media is a wonderful thing. There are countless mobile apps on the market now that will do everything from let you try on celebrity hairstyles to connect you directly with a celebrity hairstylist. I’ve mentioned various apps on the blog before, but now I have curated a list of my current faves in one handy post. These tried and true beauty apps are definite keepers that I think you will love as much as I do. Behold, the seven beauty apps you need to download right now… (Seriously, start loading the App Store!)

GlamSquad is like Uber for your beauty routine. Simply download the app, select the beautification service, and they will come to you (on location!) and pretty you up. GlamSquad offers a variety of predetermined hair and makeup looks (like “The Bombshell” and “The Siren”) to make your selection a snap. This service is super convenient and will save you time and money in traveling to your salon! Treat yourself like the star you are and have your beautification team come to you.

YouCam Makeup

Look a little washed out in your photo? Just add a little post-production blush with YouCam Makeup. (I suggest you use this one post-selfie-shoot, but pre-filtering.) It’s an app that uses facial recognition technology to digitally add makeup to your photos. It can look beautiful and natural when done correctly. It does look a little cheeseball if you go overboard, so please YouCam in moderation. Thankfully, each feature can be adjusted and does not have to be rendered at full intensity.

Beautified, co-founded by DJ/model/fitness guru/professional cool person Hannah Bronfman, allows you to effortlessly book same day salon/spa services and fitness classes with the touch of a button. It features a well-curated list of providers, all displayed in a very user-friendly way with easily accessible info and pricing.

Sephora to Go

Sephora to Go is amazing. In addition to the traditional Sephora shopping we all know and love, the app features inspiration including shoppable looks! Look at a photo of one of your glammed up favorite influencers, and click to purchase the products she put on her face. It’s super easy and fun if shopping is your mission.

Glam Style

This amazing lifestyle app features a new edition every month, always packed with fun, relevant content. (You might remember when I participated in the Glam Beauty 100 with my #GlamFam and mentioned the app back then.) This month’s Valentine’s focused edition is definitely worth checking out!

L’Oreal Makeup Genius

THIS. This app is awesome. L’Oreal’s Makeup Genius scans your face in seconds then allows you to try on any shade (in real time!) and shop direct from your phone. The makeup library also features complete looks created by L’Oreal artists that you can try. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen the video of what it looks like in action. It’s brilliant.

Martinis and Mascara

Shameless self promotion alert! It felt wrong to not include the Martinis and Mascara app in my roundup of favorite apps. Chances are, if you’re reading this post right now, you’ll like it. 😉

My New Voices of Beauty Experience

pg-nvob What an incredible ride it has been since my New Voices of Beauty journey began back in October at LuckyFABB East!

This is my last official post as one of Lucky magazine and P&G Beauty’s New Voices of Beauty, but I will forever be a cheerleader for COVERGIRL, Olay, Pantene, and Secret. In fact, I always have been, even before I received a fancy title.

Literally the first cosmetic product I ever purchased was by COVERGIRL, so the fact that I was named an honorary blogger and an official ambassador for the brand still blows my mind. I’ve been practicing “Easy, breezy, beautiful,” in the mirror since I was like 12. So, it just made sense to me to apply to audition for the New Voices of Beauty when the opportunity popped up nearly nine months ago.

I’ll never forget sitting in my Manhattan hotel room when I received the official “You’ve been selected to audition for the New Voices of Beauty tomorrow!” email. SO much has happened since then… and I will be forever grateful for this experience. Prepare to take a walk down memory lane and see some of my favorite moments below…

The audition

NVB1 What a day that was! I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous in my life. Thirty of us were selected to audition… and it was pretty intense. If you’d like to see how I did, you can check out my video below:

Fun fact: Anna Wintour walked by our group when we were sitting outside of the casting room. Of course I was too busy Instagramming about my interview to realize it was her. Classic.

The voting process

NVB2 When I found out that I was selected as one of eight finalists in November I was so stoked! I was also overwhelmed with the response from my amazing readers and friends who voted their hearts out for me until December. Thank you all again so much from the bottom of my heart. I couldn’t have done this without you!

Winner announcement

nvb4 #BestDayEver. Seriously. Even then I don’t think I realized how many amazing things were in store for me at that point though!

The challenges

nvb3 One of my favorite aspects of this campaign was being prompted to write about these products that I already know and love! I had a blast dishing out tips and sharing my favorite P&G products.

The New York trip and video shoot

photo This trip was absolutely amazing. (Click here for the full recap.) My favorite part? Filming this video! (Oh, and seeing snow for the first time, too. That was pretty cool.)

LuckyFABB West

IMG_8629 Just when I thought my jet-setting days were calming down a bit, we were invited to LuckyFABB West in Los Angeles to represent the New Voices of Beauty. We had way too much fun.

The June/July issue of Lucky

A couple weeks ago, I flipped open my new issue of Lucky to find this:

It was a total surprise. Never in a million years did I think that I would ever share magazine page space with Nicole Richie and Coco Rocha, but I’ll take it!

Not to turn all sappy here, but this wasn’t just about glossy pages, luxurious trips, and free swag. I truly loved working with the Lucky team, the gals at P&G Beauty, and of course, my fellow New Voices of Beauty. Amy, Naty, and Nikki are an absolute blast and I’m thrilled that I got to share this experience with them. I’m going to stop now before I cry.

Thank you all for tagging along with me on this journey. It’s one that I’ll never forget! #NVBforever.

Allure Magazine’s Best of Beauty Issue is Officially on Sale! (And I’m in it too!)

Remember that little contest I was in? And the photo shoot that went along with it? Of course you do! You all are the reason I placed in the top three and received the Most Buzzworthy title in the 2013 Beauty Blogger Awards! So, thank you again so much… because I truly could not have done this without you.

The October issue of Allure hit the shelves this week and I finally got my hands on a copy tonight. I literally danced around Publix with the cashier as I was checking out. It is so surreal to pick up a magazine in the store and see your face in it when you flip through the pages. I feel incredibly honored to be included in Allure’s famed Best of Beauty issue… and their biggest issue ever!

In addition to me gushing about my love of cosmetics and cocktails, the mag is packed with useful beauty goodness… like the details on the 246 amazing winners from Allure’s Best of Beauty Awards! Find out the hardest-working anti-agers, most effective frizz fighters, and the mascara that will make eyes bigger, brighter, and sexier (“Best of Beauty,” page 282). Plus: the most innovative new beauty products on the market (“The Big Breakthroughs,” page 203), worth-it splurges, and an award-worthy makeup palette for under $8!

It is definitely a must-read for all beauty fans… and I’m not just saying that because I’m in it. Speaking of which… here’s a sneak peek at part of my story (“The New Beauty Stars,” page 148):

So exciting! To read the rest you’ll have to pick up a copy of Allure… on sale now at a newsstand near you! :)

Martinis and Mascara Named One of Beauty High’s 50 Best Beauty Blogs

This calls for a cocktail! I heard the news earlier today that StyleCaster‘s Beauty High editorial team selected my blog as one of the top 50 beauty blogs alongside amazing sites like Lauren Conrad’s The Beauty Department. I was also thrilled to see some of my other favorites like my friends Arielle and Cara in addition to a slew of other amazingly awesome bloggers. I read many of these on the regular, so I’m honored to be included in the same group!

Check out the list and support your local beauty blogger. There’s no such thing as bookmarking too many! 😉
