What I Learned at Fashion Week

I’m still recovering from the whirlwind that was New York Fashion Week. And if you’re a fashion fan, you know that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the flutter of activity during fashion month around the globe. So, as we look ahead to London, Paris, and Milan, allow me to share what I’ve learned so far…

Disney is in.

Little #mermaid vibes at #MillySpring17. 😍 #nyfw

A post shared by Katie McBroom💋 (@martinisandmascara) on

I saw fairytale themed goodness on more than one runway this season. I spotted Ariel at Milly, Belle at Vicky Zhang, and even the Rodarte show had a princess lost in the forest kinda vibe. Moral of the story is, it’s cool to dress like a princess this spring. This makes me happy for obvious reasons.

The 80s are back.

Seriously. They were all over the place! Definitely in full effect at Jeremy Scott‘s “Slime Time” show where 1980s New York took center stage. Purple eyeshadow, graphic neon nail art, and all.

You can wear a dark lip in the springtime.

It’s a common misconception that you have to wear poppy brights in the spring and vampy dark lips in the fall. But that’s not a thing. You going to challenge Pat McGrath? I know I’m not. #bowdown

All body types are welcome.

Seeing all sizes and all colors on the SAME runway was truly a beautiful thing. Sure there are some designers who dedicate shows to “plus” size fashion, but to showcase both together like Christian Siriano did, on the same runway, is truly remarkable.

New York Fashion Week Must Haves

If you follow me on social, you might have seen a thing or two about New York Fashion Week recently. It’s winding down now, but I’ve been having a blast for the past week attending all the best shows and learning some amazing behind-the-scenes secrets from some of the most talented artists in the beauty biz. (More on that later!)

In the meantime, I wanted to share some of my absolute must-have products for surviving fashion week. As die-hard fashionistas know, NYFW is just the beginning of this season’s fashion extravaganza. So, if you’re jetting off to the next runway in London, take a peek at my must haves list below! Couldn’t have survived NYFW without these…

External Phone Charger

Seriously, if you do not yet have one of these, get one now. I got mine on Amazon for like $20 and it has been an absolute life saver in terms of keeping my necessary electronics juiced up when I need them the most. Snapchat sucks a lot of battery power, you guys.

Listerine Strips

These are my lifeline for making sure my breath is fresh at all times. They’re also great for a quick way to perk yourself up if you’re nodding off from exhaustion. #truth

Urban Decay Makeup Setting Spray

Sometimes there is just no time for touch-ups and your look has to last all day. I’m obsessed with the Urban Decay setting sprays – especially the All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray. Legit lasts for 16 hours so your makeup will last from early morning call time to late night show to the after party.

Bandaids

You’ve heard that you need a sturdy heel or a flat. You’ve shopped and shopped. You’re convinced that you found the perfect pair. You think your shoe selection is fine, but you’re wrong. Even the chunkiest heels can create mean blisters if you’re darting from show to show for a week straight (especially if they’re new and not properly broken in). Do your footsies a favor and keep some Bandaids in your bag.

Ardell “Babies” False Lashes

The absolute easiest way to instantly up your glam is to add a pair of falsies to any look. You could be free of any other speck of makeup and the Ardell Babies lashes will legit up your makeup game with little effort. They look natural thanks to the awesome flexible band. They’re definitely on my fav lashes list!

Cottonelle® Flushable Cleansing Cloths with CleanRipple® Texture

Even the chicest shows (I’m looking at you, Jeremy Scott) sometimes require port-a-potty situations due to the massive amount of attendees. So, take it from me and do not get caught off guard in a situation where you’re out of toilet paper! Luckily, I had some Cottonelle® Flushable Cleansing Cloths with CleanRipple® Texture to keep me clean and fresh in all the sketchy restroom situations I encountered this week. Cottonelle® with CleanRipple® Texture keeps you clean so you can feel confident enough to strut your stuff, whether down the runway, the red carpet or the city streets. It’s designed to clean better, so you’re clean and confident enough to go commando. Just keepin’ it real, folks.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade 1

Happy summer, lovelies!

Every year around this time I’ve made it a tradition to celebrate the season by attending the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. The 34th annual parade went down on Saturday and I had an absolute blast!

This time around, I sported a comfort-chic mermaid look rather than going full mermaid with a full costume tail, wig and the whole nine yards.

Even though I wasn’t in full garb like many other merfolk, I got a ton of compliments on my mer-OOTD – especially my shoes!

Teva Universal

I wore my new Teva Original Universal Iridescent sandals in Deep Teal. Featuring reflective materials and a cool flash of color (like a mermaid tail!), these party-ready shoes take a classic style into new realms of glam. They were soooo comfy as I was running around the boardwalk (and in the sand) all day. I can already tell that these babies are going to be my go-to summer sandal this season!

To complete my outfit, I scooped up both my fun mermaid scale leggings and “Part Time Mermaid” tank on Amazon. Highly recommended for anyone who loves to live the #mermaidlife!

Shopping for Summer with People StyleWatch Mag

People StyleWatch

Is there anything more fun than shopping for summer?

My friends at People StyleWatch mag invited me on a blogger shopping trip to the amazing Tanger Outlets on Long Island last weekend. They didn’t have to ask me twice!

A bunch of my fav fellow bloggers and I all received a $250 Tanger Outlets gift card and a challenge to put together a summer look with our #TangerFinds!

Spoiler alert: I ended up falling in love with a summer-perfect clutch, crab coin purse, and white retro sunnies at Kate Spade. I mean… you can’t properly complete an outfit without the accessories, right?

We all had such a blast! Watch below to see all the fun that went down that day:

Celebrating Equality and Diversity on International Women’s Day

NoFOMO

Happy International Women’s Day, ladies!

If you follow me on social, you may have noticed Martinis and Mascara has been in the news recently. I’m very proud of this coverage in particular because of the message behind it.

Early last week, I ended up in this Seventeen mag article celebrating Target’s #NoFOMO campaign. This campaign is all about banishing body shame and not being afraid of missing out on life’s awesome activities because of our insecurities. I was immediately sold on the idea when I was first approached to partner with Target on this. I posed in my bathing suit (it’s this one, btw!) in the snow to show girls of all shapes and sizes that they shouldn’t be afraid of showing off their bodies!

The Daily Mail also covered the #NoFOMO campaign, continuing to spread awareness of this awesome trend. I’m thrilled to be part of this movement and I have heard so many positive comments from those who have been inspired to embrace their bodies because of this conversation. I think it’s an important one for women to embrace who they are (inside and out) and not apologize for being a certain size. I’ve embraced who I am – and let me tell you – it feels awesome.

With that, I want to make something very clear. Being pro “curve” or “plus” or “voluptuous” or whatever we want to call it, does not mean that I am anti-thin. (Just like being a feminist does not mean you’re anti-men, it means you believe women deserve equal treatment. No more, no less.)

When I say I’m celebrating all bodies – I mean all bodies. ALL WOMEN should be free to feel comfortable in their own skin and experience life to the fullest without fear of judgement from others. And just because I’m a busty size 12, that doesn’t mean I can’t celebrate my smaller chested skinny friends. Skinny shaming is just as bad as fat shaming. We are all beautiful and we need to lift each other up.

Speaking of which, if you’re in need of a confidence boost, I encourage you to read this recent Huffington Post piece on what real women say gives them confidence. In it, I share some of my tips for keeping my self-esteem levels in check. (Spoiler alert: My strategy involves talking to myself. I promise it works.)

Lastly, on this International Women’s Day, I encourage everyone to take a good long look in the mirror and tell yourself you’re fucking beautiful. Because you are.
