How to #MakeAPowerMove with COVERGIRL, Olay, Pantene & Levo

Prepare to be inspired.

Some of my absolute fav beauty brands – COVERGIRL, Olay, and Pantene – recently partnered with Levo, a company dedicated to career advice and mentorship for millennials in the workplace, to launch the Make a Power Move program. #MakeAPowerMove was designed to provide women with the beauty, style and career advice they need to put forward the best version of themselves.  To celebrate this amazing partnership, they are hosting events to mentor women and provide the right tools they need to advance in their careers.

I was fortunate enough to be included among the group of women invited to experience their #MakeAPowerMove event in New York a few weeks ago. My fellow New Voices of Beauty winner Naty and I both attended and we had a ball getting our hair done with Pantene and our makeup done with COVERGIRL. Just like old times! (In related news, I’m obsessed with Pantene’s dry shampoo and its hair plumping magic. See below for evidence of this wizardry on my usually limp locks.)

The event also featured a panel of powerhouse women I adore including incredible blogger Felicia Walker Benson and adorable TV personality Ali Fedotowsky.

I actually met Felicia right after I made my own latest power move, so I was thrilled to hear what she had to say. (As you may remember, I was invited to judge the Glam Beauty 100 literally the day after I took the big leap of faith and moved to New York. Felicia was a fellow judge and we had a blast together on that trip. Full circle!)

I was also eager to hear from Ali, who I remember as the badass who left #TheBachelor for her career, kickstarting a series of power moves that lead her to her current gig at E! News.

Ali Fedotowsky

So, in addition to the usual goodies – the complimentary makeovers, passed macaroons and free booze – we walked away with so much more from this event. Ali, Felicia and the gals from Levo dished out some seriously inspiring advice for taking control of your career and living the life you deserve. Read on for some of my favorite takeaways from these inspiring females…

  • Trust in yourself. Ali stressed the importance of staying positive and believing in yourself. “You’ll go through a lot of ups and downs– it’s part of the career journey. When times get tough, don’t beat yourself up — things don’t always go as planned. Keep a positive outlook, learn from your experiences and lean on your support system to continue growing in the workplace.” Excellent advice!
  • Build strong peer relationships. “Traditionally in the workplace, there’s a lot of focus on mentor relationships, but it’s equally important to build peer relationships as well,” Felicia said. “Developing relationships at all levels helps build confidence in your abilities and establishes a level of shared trust to ensure your peers have your back. Both mentor and peer relationships are vital to career success.”
  • Put your best face forward. Ali admits that hectic work schedules paired with an active social calendar can leave skin dull and tired-looking, which means you may not look and feel your best. A good moisturizing and anti-aging facial cream can help revive tired looking skin. “I rely on Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream which helps reveal brighter, younger-looking skin and fights the appearance of skin fatigue,” she said. I second her thoughts on the Olay cream. It’s incredible. And I truly believe that when you look good, you feel good.
  • Go for a classic, bold lip. Felicia feels that a statement lip instantly creates a polished, professional look and I couldn’t agree more. “I like COVERGIRL Outlast Longwear Lipcolor in Red Rouge. It’s a nice pick-me-up if you find you need a little beauty boost right before a meeting. When wearing a bold, red lip, balance the rest of your look with neutral eye colors, soft liner, and a light pinch of color on the cheeks,” said Felicia. She also shared her tip for mixing up the traditional bold red lip – pat on the lip color with your finger rather than saturating your entire lip for a softer finish. Love it!
  • Embrace the impact of eye contact. Eye contact is important because it sends a message of self-assurance — something that’s key when communicating your ideas! A quick and easy way to frame your peepers for optimal eye contact is with a swipe of volumizing mascara. ”When I have a big meeting, the one makeup item I’m never without is mascara. It’s a quick and easy step that makes my eyes stand out in a flattering way,” said Felicia. Both Felicia and Ali shared their love for COVERGIRL The Super Sizer Mascara by LashBlast in particular. ”Mascara is super important to me – I love a lash and a power lip!” said Ali. “I’m all about The Super Sizer Mascara by LashBlast.” For the record, I tested it out myself and can vouch for the awesomeness of The Super Sizer.

Bethenny Frankel Debuts New Skinnygirl Cocktails at Launch Party

Bethenny Frankel

Seriously, I should just start another blog called “What I did on Tuesday.”

After Kim and Khloe’s shindig, I skipped on down to Rockefeller Center for the “Boy Meets Skinnygirl” party to celebrate the launch of the new additions to Skinnygirl Cocktails.

With the original Skinnygirl herself, Bethenny Frankel, behind the bar slinging drinks, an enthusiastic group of guests kicked off their Valentine’s Day week by sipping the two newest products in Skinnygirl Cocktail’s closet of low-calorie cocktailing options.

For someone who loves mixed drinks as much as I do, I can be pretty lazy when it comes to bartending at home for myself after a hard day. Sometimes when you need that drink, the last thing you want to do is have to bust out the shaker. That’s why I fell in love with the new Skinnygirl Spicy Lime Margarita, the most recent addition to the brand’s ready-to-serve lineup. It tastes like you put a lot of effort into something that really has only one step! And as much as I love whipping up cocktail recipes, some occasions just call for an easy, one-pour drink.

Here’s the full scoop on the two new girls in town:

  • Skinnygirl Spicy Lime Margarita ~ Skinnygirl Spicy Lime Margarita is the perfect combination of heat meets sweet, offering a well-rounded balance of cool lime, spicy chili and tequila. SkinnygirlSpicy Lime Margarita contains a light citrus aroma with spicy undertones, finishing with a bright lime flavor and lingering subtle heat. At less than 100 calories per serving, SkinnygirlSpicy Lime Margarita is 19.9 proof and offered in 750 mL and 1.75 L bottles. (Suggested retail price is $12.99 for a 750 mL bottle, currently available nationwide; $19.99 for a 1.75 L bottle, available March 2015.)
  • Skinnygirl Pinot Noir ~ Skinnygirl Pinot Noir contains aromas of dark cherry and mouthwatering flavors of dark cherry, toasted oak and vanilla. At 100 calories per 5 oz. serving, the newest girl to join Skinnygirl, the Wine Collection offers a long and silky finish with juicy acidity. Skinnygirl Pinot Noir is 10% ABV (alcohol by volume) and offered in a 750 mL bottle. Skinnygirl Pinot Noir is ideal for meal pairings, well-suited to pair with a wide variety of ethnic dishes and classic cuisines due to its consistent acidity, subtle, silky tannins and lighter-bodied style. (Suggested retail price is $11.99 for a 750mL bottle, currently available nationwide.)

That night, the cocktail list also included Skinnygirl Pinot Grigio, Skinnygirl Sweet’aritas. Skinnygirl Naked Cosmos, and Skinnygirl Pomegranate Tangerine Spritzers. All of them were delish. (Don’t judge me. Remember, this was all blog research.)

All the fun was for a good cause as the brand donated $50,000 to long-standing charity partner Dress for Success. I’m a huge fan of this charity myself, so I was very happy to learn that. The funds will assist Dress for Success with their mission of helping disadvantaged women on their paths to financial independence.

“Our newest girls offer something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a cocktail with a little heat and a little citrus, or a delicious wine option without the guilt,” Bethenny said. “We had a great time unveiling the new products all while giving back to Dress for Success, a cause that is so important to me.”

Celebs partying for a good cause at the event included everyone from comedians like Lisa Lampanelli to reality stars like Jax Taylor from “Vanderpump Rules” and “The Bachelorette” contestant Chris Bukowski. The guest list also included Bethenny’s “Real Housewives of New York City” cast mates LuAnn de Lesseps, Sonja Morgan, Ramona Singer, Kristen Taekman and Heather Thomson.

PicStitch RHONY There may or may not be footage of Sonja and I becoming besties on the next season of RHONY. Only time will tell.

In the meantime, stay tuned for multiple Skinnygirl cocktail recipe posts to follow soon on Martinis and Mascara. I’m obsessed!

Coachella Beauty Musts from Celebrity Makeup Artist Charlotte Tilbury

Festival season is upon us! If you are headed out to Coachella this weekend, take these tips from the amazing Charlotte Tilbury. Charlotte is an international makeup artist who has spent decades spent creating unsurpassed beauty looks on famous faces like Kate Moss, Jennifer Lopez, and Rihanna. I am totally with her on all of these recommendations and I’m thrilled that she shared them with me so I can share them with you guys!

The desert setting means dewy, creamy textures work well, rather than powder-based products which can slip off in the heat. These tips from Charlotte will keep you looking gorgeous from Coachella to Governor’s Ball and everywhere in between (like SunFest for the girls in my neck of the woods!). Read on and prepare to get glammed up festival style:

  • Coachella is all about fringed crop-tops, and leg-baring denim cut-offs; so make like Gisele and use a moisturizing, gleam-getting, gorgeous illuminator cream to highlight your arms, legs, and décolletage. For the face, mix a high SPF with a light-reflecting illuminator like Tom Ford’s Summer Skin Illuminator for glowing protection. Build up the sheen on temples, cheeks and nose to mimic where the sun would light up the face.
  • Create a seductive smoky eye in seconds with a crème eye shadow pen – you can keep it in your shoulder bag. Sweep over the eyelids, smudging outwards and upwards with your finger to create a winged look. For added summer sexiness, smudge underneath the lower lash line too.
  • Add a pop of color to bronzed, freckled skin by using a striking stain on the lips – experiment with eye-catching coral, berry and plum tones of Becca’s Beach Tint. Cheat a smattering of freckles by painting them in using a soft, taupe eyeliner.
  • Lipstick is your best friend. Vamp up your ethereal maxi-dress with a crimson pout and blend a little color onto the apples of the cheeks for an effortlessly pretty, dewy glow.
  • Keep a little stash of pointed Q-tips, some face-wipes (festival is the only acceptable occasion to use these!) and a mini pot of moisturizer in your emergency kit. A Q-tip can help fix a poised feline flick on even the wildest of dance floors.

My Haircut with Nick Arrojo

Remember how much I adore celebrity stylist Nick Arrojo and his killer line of hair products? Well, in a recent visit to Florida he invited me to Visions, an amazing ARROJO flagship salon in Wellington, for a once in a lifetime opportunity to have my hair cut and styled by him! I’m still pinching myself a little bit.

The experience started with cleansing my strands using ARROJO Color Save Shampoo and Conditioner – the perfect choice for color treated locks like mine. The Color Save products lock in vibrancy and shine while protecting color and preventing fading.

(Random fun fact: In a twist of small world fate, my friend Ashley, also a talented stylist, works at Visions and shampooed me. She was one of my first makeup models when I started doing makeup many moons ago.)

Nick sliced thin partings of hair then meticulously razored it section by section. He then blew it out using an ARROJO paddle brush and hairdryer. After fully removing the moisture, he point cut it dry so every strand blends beautifully.

To prep for styling, Nick used the Protective Thickening Lotion and the Shine Luxe Oil, both excellent thermal protectants. I’m now addicted to these two products! The Thickening Lotion does exactly what it says – and it really beefed up my skinny strands. The Shine Luxe Oil fights frizz and adds luster. You can use it to prep damp hair or even smooth on a tiny bit after heat styling to polish your finished style.

One of the things I really love about Nick is that he truly makes it an experience, not just a routine visit to the salon. He is not only talented and knowledgeable, but entertaining too. So much fun to be around!

IMG_4854 (He was also a great sport while I was playing selfie paparazzi the whole time.)

He created a totally unique design while framing my face and adding a lot of dimension. My hair has so much movement now and feels so light and amazing. Best haircut ever! Here’s the finished result:

I felt like a million dollars, both during and after. With the New Year upon us, it’s the perfect time for a makeover, so if you are looking for a big change (or even a subtle one!) I’d definitely suggest booking an appointment with Nick or even one of the Nick approved stylists on his team.

If you would like to take my advice, check out the ARROJO menu of services and visit for additional information. Stay tuned for more soon about Visions Salon in Wellington and Nick’s Soho studio, as well as info on upcoming events and ARROJO products!

Get that Wonder Woman Glow with Gal Gadot’s Favorite Beauty Products

If you’re a nerd like I am, I’m sure you’ve already heard that Israeli beauty Gal Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman in the Batman vs. Superman movie (or Batfleck, as I like to call it for short). For those of you living under a rock, the film also stars the Oscar winning Ben Affleck as Batman and stone cold fox Henry Cavill as Superman. It’s not slated for release until 2015, but that will not keep Hollywood (or me!) from buzzing about the cast of characters until then.

I was instantly intrigued by their casting choice for Wonder Woman, so naturally I had to find out what she does to make herself look so wonderful. Gal is GORGEOUS, so I’d take beauty advice from her any day. She’s definitely doing something right!

“With the type of work I do, it is extremely important to take care of, and maintain my hair and my skin,” Gal said. “Getting my hair styled and make up done several times a week can definitely affect the health of my hair and skin!”

So true, girl, so true. Here are her favorite beauty products, direct from Wonder Woman herself:

Vine Vera Resveratrol High-Potency Vitamin Cream

“I love using this cream because it helps keep my skin looking hydrated and glowing all day long.”

Vine Vera Resveratrol Phyto-Elevating Mask

“This mask deep cleans my skin. My skin feels so refreshed and radiant after every use.”

Kerastase Caviar Hair Mask

“This mask helps hydrate and nourish my hair. It makes my hair soft, shiny and smelling amazing.”

Dior Air Flash Spray Foundation

“This is a spray foundation that I absolutely love. When there’s no time for make up the easiest solution is to spray and go. It also gives great coverage which is a must!”

Hypnotic Poison by Christian Dior

“This is my signature smell; I won’t go a day without using it!”

A girl after my own heart. She has killer taste in products – especially that Kerastase mask! She is also the face of the Vine Vera products she loves so much. So pretty right? Can’t wait to see Gal in Batman vs. Superman. Get it, Wonder Woman!

Five Questions: Talking Beauty with Real Housewives of Miami’s Lea Black

leablack Entrepreneur and Real Housewife Lea Black, wife of high-profile attorney Roy Black, recently expanded her beauty empire to include a new line of luxury skincare, appropriately titled Lea Black Beauty. The line is anti-aging focused, but chock-full of quality ingredients suitable for skin types of all ages.

Lea, along with successful cosmetics professional (and Lea Black Beauty President) Melinda Wells-DeRocher, created a signature skincare system which features four core products: Advanced Anti-Aging Serum, Everyday Moisture, Intensive Moisture Renewal Crème, and the Revitalizing Skin Exfoliant. Lea Black Beauty also offers a Non-Surgical Facelift Kit, complete with Lea’s Facial Contour Lift Powder, Facial Contour Lift Gel, a scoop, mixing cup, and fan brush applicator.leablackcollection

I caught up with the beauty maven last week and she boasted some pretty steep product claims about her signature moisturizer. After testing it out myself I discovered she wasn’t kidding! I’ve been using Lea’s Intensive Moisture Renewal Crème for almost a week now and have noticed a significant increase in my skin’s moisture level. The rich cream is infused with a natural extract complex consisting of aloe vera, grapefruit, licorice, cucumber and white tea. It’s also packed with vitamins A, C and E, as well as mango seed, cocoa and shea butters, and a-lipoic acid. I LOVE it. It has a light scent and provides hydration for days.

I also got the scoop on the socialite’s take on beauty, from her can’t-live-without-it product to how long it takes her to primp for her annual charity gala. Here’s what she had to say…

Five Questions with Lea Black

MM: What inspired you to launch your own skincare line?

LB: I started it the mid ’80s because I always admired my grandmothers’ flawless skin and I learned a bit about the business in California, so I decided to do my own thing.

MM: What is your favorite look for a night out in Miami?

LB: Fabulous jeans, chic top and lots of jewelry with one of my blinged out handbags which you can check out at

MM: How long does it take you to primp for your annual charity gala?

Face Off and McKenzie Westmore Return to SyFy Tonight

Although I adore straight makeup, I found myself utterly fascinated with the process of creating and applying prosthetics, especially after learning the techniques in makeup school.

Someone else who shares my passion is actress McKenzie Westmore, who literally grew up surrounded by it. (Speaking of Passions, McKenzie is probably best known for her almost 10 year stint as Sheridan Crane on the NBC soap.) She also happens to be member of one of the most legendary makeup families in Hollywood. The Westmores are pioneers in the industry, a makeup power family whose Emmy and Oscar award collection puts even my ruby slipper collection to shame.

I got the chance to speak with McKenzie just in time to hear the scoop on the new season of Face Off, a Project Runway type show about special effects makeup, which she hosts. I have been glued to the SyFy channel weekly since the first season premiered in January of 2011. (If you missed seasons 1 and 2, both are available in HD now on Amazon Instant Video.) Contestants get to showcase their work not only to McKenzie, but also to a panel of esteemed judges that includes the Oscar award-winning Ve Neil, artist and department head on some of my favorite films including the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Edward Scissorhands, Mrs. Doubtfire, and countless others.

McKenzie called me from California yesterday to chat about the upcoming episodes of Face Off and all things makeup. She told me there is a lot to look forward to in the third season – from the 90 minute Star Wars themed premiere airing tonight – to the upcoming huge challenges, awesome special guests (Brian Grazer and Kevin Smith!), and top secret mid-season twist.

Here are a few things I bet you didn’t know about the multi-talented Face Off host:

  1. Her great-grandfather invented false eyelashes. I swear by false eyelashes. Always have, always will. Now we know we have Mr. George Westmore to thank for that! He also established the first movie makeup department, made wigs for English royalty, and fathered three generations of highly successful makeup artists. No big deal!
  2. McKenzie dabbled in makeup before ultimately following her passion for acting. “I did a couple of courses here and there. There was a period of time when I was going to go in that direction and follow in the family footsteps,” she said. After that she discovered that her true calling was acting. Since then McKenzie has worked both stage and screen, with roles in shows from Friends to Dexter.
  3. Robert De Niro got her her first film role. McKenzie’s dad, famed makeup artist Michael Westmore, worked with him at the Westmore home lab in preparation for De Niro’s makeup in Raging Bull. “My dad was doing his makeup for the film and Robert would basically babysit me as my dad was running his prosthetics,” she said. The pair developed such a great rapport that De Niro asked if she could play his daughter in the film.
  4. She sculpted aliens for Star Trek. Well… sort of! Her dad started work on the Star Trek franchise in 1987 when McKenzie was 10 years old. “Sometimes he would sculpt in the dining room! Once he was working on an alien head for Star Trek and left it unattended… I started sticking stuff everywhere like a kid would! Instead of getting upset, he liked what I had done and kept it in the final piece,” she said.
  5. Her dream role would be to star in a movie musical.  A musical theater lover at heart, McKenzie thinks a role in a movie musical would be the greatest combination of her favorite aspects of performing. “My ultimate dream would be to be in a musical movie like Moulin Rouge or Grease,” she said. Until her big musical movie debut, you can catch McKenzie in the new horror flick Vile, out on DVD Sept. 11, and of course, on season three of Face Off.

A girl after my own heart! Watch McKenzie and the rest of the bunch on the season premiere of Face Off tonight at 9 p.m. on SyFy.
