Spice Up Your Mani With IV Kulture

IVKulture Nail Polish

Martinis and Mascara readers, listen up! I have discovered your new favorite nail polish – IV Kulture.

It is one of the few nail polish lines on the market that is free of five major cosmetic toxins that have been linked to various cancers and health conditions. Reigning as a proud vegan product, the product is not tested on animals.

The lovely ladies behind the brand (they’re all stunning sisters – like a pack of classier Kardashians) sent me two beautiful shades to try out, Margarita Time and Miami Vice. Both shades are appropriately titled since these products are made with Sunshine down in my home state of sunny Florida.

I adore both of these brights! Margarita Time is a vibrant classic red and Miami Vice is a shimmering orange with golden flecks. I chose to wear a design featuring the two together, but I think they would look stunning on their own if a solid mani is more of your thing.

Want to get my look? Creating a negative space mani is super easy and creates a really trendy, high-end effect that doesn’t require a lot of artistic technique.

Here’s what we did to get mine:

  1. With a thin nail art brush, paint on a thin line of Margarita Time from the center right side of the nail, diagonally up to the center tip of the nail.
  2. Fill in (with the same polish shade) to the top of the nail.
  3. Repeat on the other side. This should create the look of a red arrow (or a half diamond).
  4. With a thin nail art brush, paint on a thin line of Miami Vice from the center right side of the nail, diagonally downward to the center base of the nail.
  5. Fill in with the same shade to the bottom of the nail, filling in the space to the cuticle area.
  6. Repeat on the other side. This should complete the look, with the bare space in the center creating a diamond.
  7. Voila! Easy and beautiful negative space mani.

Ready to fill your polish collection with IV Kulture? Shop all of their beautiful shades here!

The Best Pantene Products: Current Favorites & My Pantene Routine

Pantene

If you’ve been following Martinis and Mascara for a while, you know I’ve had a long standing love affair with Pantene. I’m a sucker for a quality product paired with an affordable price tag!

I feel like I’ve tried almost everything on the Pantene shelf, so I’m thrilled to share the best Pantene products I’ve found for my particular hair type. (Shout out to my fine/thin color-treated girls out there!)

Read on for my Pantene routine:

Step 1: Wash hair with Color Revival Shampoo and Conditioner

Fun fact: Pantene shampoos and conditioners work together to make hair 2x stronger than shampoo alone. I’ve recently been obsessing over the Pantene Color Revival Shampoo and Conditioner. I need all the help I can get when it comes to retaining my red hair, so I love how effective this set is at restoring health and vibrancy to color-treated hair. It also creates a protective outer layer to prevent damage while locking in hair color and moisture.

Step 2: Treat hair with Pantene Damage Detox Weekly Rehab Creme

Like the name states, this is a treatment you only need to work into your routine once per week. After shampooing, apply this like you would apply conditioner. This detoxifying treatment removes buildup from chemically treated hair to promote natural shine. True story, I have also shaved my legs with this stuff because its moisturizing properties work better than most shave gels. Totally not a Pantene promoted way to use this product, but I’m telling you, it works.

Step 3: Up the volume with Powerful Body Booster Spray

My limp locks are always in the mood for some extra help in the volume department. After towel drying my hair, I spray the Pantene Full and Strong Powerful Body Booster Spray all over my damp hair, concentrating on the root area and distributing evenly by running my fingers though my hair.

Step 4: Smooth locks with Pantene Blow Dry Creme

As a last step before heat styling, I take a tiny dollop on Pantene Smooth Blow Dry Creme in my hands and run through my hair, concentrating on the ends. A little goes a long way with this stuff, so be careful not to go overboard! It helps to seal the deal and make strands silky and sleek when blowdrying.

Step 5: Extend your blowout with Pantene Dry Shampoo

I live for dry shampoo. I seriously don’t know how I got by without it. Pantene makes a killer variety of dry shampoos, my favorite being the Pantene Blowout Extend Dry Shampoo. Need to refresh your style? Spray this directly on your roots to absorb oil and massage with your fingertips. I use it often when my hair isn’t dirty just to give a little extra oomph and up the volume instantly, too.

#WantThatHair? Pantene is extremely easily accessible. You can find brands you trust, like Pantene, for everyday low prices at Walmart! Even better, Pantene at Walmart has a 2x money back guarantee. I know in New York it’s hard to come by a Walmart, so if you’re in the same boat you can always find Pantene at Walmart.com if you can’t make it to the store. Happy shopping!

Pretty Little Liars Hairstyles: Beauty Secrets from the Liars’ Head Stylist

TROIAN BELLISARIO, SHAY MITCHELL, ASHLEY BENSON, LUCY HALE

Spoiler alert! No, I am not going to spill who A is (go watch the finale if you haven’t already!), but I did get the scoop on the best hair secrets from Pretty Little Liars hair department head, Kim M. Ferry. To celebrate Tuesday’s bomb-dropping finale, Kim shared her styling secrets with hair tips from season 6.

“At this point in our season, my hair department’s ‘top hair moment’ is definitely the prom episode titled ‘Last Dance,’” she said. “We designed some great hairstyles, built, cut and added human hair extensions and intricate braids.  I hired a jewelry designer, Mary Anne Brown. She made me some beautiful custom hair accessories – all handmade for one special PLL.”

Kim also shared some length specific tips on styling short cuts like Aria and Hannah: “Their shorter, textured hair lengths look so good on both of them. As for styling now, I still use a good setting spray, before I curl them like White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Hold Thermal Styling Spray. It can be used wet or dry. I usually spray each section I am going to curl. I like the softness of our “beach wave” looks, and have loosened them even more on Hanna and Aria in Season 6. We have more youthful looks in the first 10 episodes of our show created by letting hair hang around their faces and drift onto their shoulders. By using a 1 inch wide hot curling iron, I wrap 1 inch hair sections vertically around the barrel, hold for 4-5 seconds and then gently pull down on the curl and let the hair fall into place to cool as it hangs. This angle helps to give the effect that they walked out of the ocean and let their hair dry in the sun. I don’t usually use hairspray on either of them, but I do add my preferred oil to their ends daily: White Sands Orchids Oil. Put a little on your fingertips and lightly add it to dry, tired ends and watch it smooth hair immediately.”

For the longer haired ladies like Spencer and Emily, Kim details the best techniques for their loose waves: ”The technique is really very close to that for the shorter hair I described above.  To create larger waves, simply switch to a larger iron. I think a 1 inch hot iron works great with longer beach waves as well. Still use a good setting spray, and curl vertically instead of horizontally and be sure to pull the wave out as it cools.”

Excellent advice from an excellent stylist! I drool over the girls’ hair every week and I love how they weave their personalities into their style - from wardrobe to makeup and hair, too. I’m interested to see where the Liars’ style evolution takes them on the show in the next season! Until then, we’ll always have these prom memories. Happy styling, PLLers!

How to #MakeAPowerMove with COVERGIRL, Olay, Pantene & Levo

mapm

Prepare to be inspired.

Some of my absolute fav beauty brands – COVERGIRL, Olay, and Pantene – recently partnered with Levo, a company dedicated to career advice and mentorship for millennials in the workplace, to launch the Make a Power Move program. #MakeAPowerMove was designed to provide women with the beauty, style and career advice they need to put forward the best version of themselves.  To celebrate this amazing partnership, they are hosting events to mentor women and provide the right tools they need to advance in their careers.

I was fortunate enough to be included among the group of women invited to experience their #MakeAPowerMove event in New York a few weeks ago. My fellow New Voices of Beauty winner Naty and I both attended and we had a ball getting our hair done with Pantene and our makeup done with COVERGIRL. Just like old times! (In related news, I’m obsessed with Pantene’s dry shampoo and its hair plumping magic. See below for evidence of this wizardry on my usually limp locks.)

_VH13447

_VH13364

_VH13833

The event also featured a panel of powerhouse women I adore including incredible blogger Felicia Walker Benson and adorable TV personality Ali Fedotowsky.

I actually met Felicia right after I made my own latest power move, so I was thrilled to hear what she had to say. (As you may remember, I was invited to judge the Glam Beauty 100 literally the day after I took the big leap of faith and moved to New York. Felicia was a fellow judge and we had a blast together on that trip. Full circle!)

I was also eager to hear from Ali, who I remember as the badass who left #TheBachelor for her career, kickstarting a series of power moves that lead her to her current gig at E! News.

Ali Fedotowsky

So, in addition to the usual goodies – the complimentary makeovers, passed macaroons and free booze – we walked away with so much more from this event. Ali, Felicia and the gals from Levo dished out some seriously inspiring advice for taking control of your career and living the life you deserve. Read on for some of my favorite takeaways from these inspiring females…

  • Trust in yourself. Ali stressed the importance of staying positive and believing in yourself. “You’ll go through a lot of ups and downs– it’s part of the career journey. When times get tough, don’t beat yourself up — things don’t always go as planned. Keep a positive outlook, learn from your experiences and lean on your support system to continue growing in the workplace.” Excellent advice!
  • Build strong peer relationships. “Traditionally in the workplace, there’s a lot of focus on mentor relationships, but it’s equally important to build peer relationships as well,” Felicia said. “Developing relationships at all levels helps build confidence in your abilities and establishes a level of shared trust to ensure your peers have your back. Both mentor and peer relationships are vital to career success.”
  • Put your best face forward. Ali admits that hectic work schedules paired with an active social calendar can leave skin dull and tired-looking, which means you may not look and feel your best. A good moisturizing and anti-aging facial cream can help revive tired looking skin. “I rely on Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream which helps reveal brighter, younger-looking skin and fights the appearance of skin fatigue,” she said. I second her thoughts on the Olay cream. It’s incredible. And I truly believe that when you look good, you feel good.
  • Go for a classic, bold lip. Felicia feels that a statement lip instantly creates a polished, professional look and I couldn’t agree more. “I like COVERGIRL Outlast Longwear Lipcolor in Red Rouge. It’s a nice pick-me-up if you find you need a little beauty boost right before a meeting. When wearing a bold, red lip, balance the rest of your look with neutral eye colors, soft liner, and a light pinch of color on the cheeks,” said Felicia. She also shared her tip for mixing up the traditional bold red lip – pat on the lip color with your finger rather than saturating your entire lip for a softer finish. Love it!
  • Embrace the impact of eye contact. Eye contact is important because it sends a message of self-assurance — something that’s key when communicating your ideas! A quick and easy way to frame your peepers for optimal eye contact is with a swipe of volumizing mascara. ”When I have a big meeting, the one makeup item I’m never without is mascara. It’s a quick and easy step that makes my eyes stand out in a flattering way,” said Felicia. Both Felicia and Ali shared their love for COVERGIRL The Super Sizer Mascara by LashBlast in particular. ”Mascara is super important to me – I love a lash and a power lip!” said Ali. “I’m all about The Super Sizer Mascara by LashBlast.” For the record, I tested it out myself and can vouch for the awesomeness of The Super Sizer.

In Honor of Mom: Products That Remind Me of My First Beauty Icon

mom

I get asked all the time who my ultimate beauty icon is.

Marilyn Monroe always comes to mind. Gwen Stefani, even. But the very first and most influential beauty icon in my life was – and still is – my mom.

She was the first person I ever saw apply lipstick. The first to show me how to braid my hair. And the one who brought me to the store to buy me my very first powder compact. She was the style icon that influenced me before I even knew anyone else in the world existed.

So, in honor of Mother’s Day, here are the products that remind me of my introduction to the beauty world… from my first beauty inspiration, my mom:

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Advanced Time Complex Capsules

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide

I remember my mom LOVED these Elizabeth Arden capsules. The oil blend hiding within these capsules provides a serious softening effect on the skin. Mom’s skin still looks great, so I know it works!

CoverGirl Clear Mascara

CoverGirl Clear Mascara

This was the very first cosmetic product my mom ever bought for me. I wanted to wear makeup so badly and I don’t think I appreciated the amazingness that is clear mascara back then. Now clear mascara is one of my makeup kit staples. I didn’t realize it way back when, but she was on to something!

Coppertone Water Babies SPF 50 Sunscreen

Water Babies

This bottle looks like my childhood. As I’m sure you all have noticed, I have extremely fair skin. My mom used to slather my skin in Water Babies basically every time I left the house. She instilled the importance of sun protection at a very young age. My skin and I are very thankful for that.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

After all of the mascaras I’ve tested, this classic remains one of my favorites. Before I saw it in all of the “cult favorite” roundups in all of my beauty magazines, I saw it in my mom’s makeup bag.

Olay Active Hydrating Beauty Fluid

olay-active-hydrating-beauty-fluid

This one is also a classic. I remember my mom used to always use the original Oil of Olay beauty fluid, complete with powdery scent and major moisturizing power.

Estee Lauder All Day Lipstick

Estee Lauder Lipstick

My mom always encouraged me to express myself and she never stopped me from snooping in her makeup kit. I often created my own masterpieces with her Estee Lauder lipsticks.

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque

Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask

I can remember going to the beauty supply store with my mom to pick up this mask in the peak of my bad skin years. It does a seriously good job of removing blackheads and calming acne. I haven’t used it in a very long time, but this one is worth bringing out of the vault!

White Diamonds by Elizabeth Taylor

White Diamonds

This one’s actually a bonus product. It doesn’t remind me of my mom, but of her mom. I know “grandma perfume” has a particularly negative connotation, but I always thought my grandma smelled amazing. I can vividly remember sneaking into my grandma’s room whenever I came to visit to drool over her elegant fragrance tray. Confession: I always snuck a spray of her White Diamonds.

Beauty Products You Need For Spring

For the first time, it’s fiiiiinally starting to feel like spring here in NYC! I didn’t even need to wear a coat today, ya’ll. In honor of this beautiful springiness, I’m sharing five of my must-have beauty products you need in your makeup bag this season…

Kat Von D Innerstellar Eyeshadow Palette

Kat Von D Innerstellar Palette

Add a pop of springy pastels to your traditional smoky eye with Kat Von D’s super versatile Innerstellar palette. It has everything you need to create a traditional dramatic look and also allows you to capture several spring trends in one product. Blend up a neutral brown toned look, add a pop of metallic silver, or sweep on some subtle springtime lavender, all with the same handy palette.

Fresh Peony Brightening UV Shield SPF 50+

Fresh Peony UV Brightening SPF 50

I first discovered the Fresh Peony Brightening UV Shield in the fall at the Glam Beauty 100, but this product has spring written all over it. It packs a whopping SPF 50 in it which should come in handy for all of the picnics you’ll be experiencing in this awesome sunny weather. The best part is that it doesn’t look or feel like a traditional sunscreen. This moisturizing fluid contains an exclusive brightening complex derived from peony and licorice root extracts. It leaves the skin looking luminous and creates the perfect base to wear under foundation.

Dior Addict Lip Glow

Dior Addict Lip Glow

This is actually a fabulous lippie to slather on year round, but I love it especially for spring. It’s the exact opposite of all of the heavy vampiness we’ve been wearing on our lips all winter. The pink tint is my favorite, but there is also a beautiful coral color that is perfectly on trend for spring. Both have an amazing silky texture and will react with the chemistry of your lips to create a personalized flattering shade.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder

Hourglass Ambient Palette

This Hourglass Ambient lighting palette is a must-have for any beauty junkie. It allows you to create beautifully diffused dimension that lives a lit-from-within glow without shimmer overload. It will brighten up your look gorgeously and easily. Obsessed.

Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Ody(Sea)

Marc Jacobs Highliner

Let’s get real, when Kim Kardashian sports a certain shade, the world pays attention.  She recently brought turquoise rimmed eyes back into the limelight, so it’s safe to say this look is reaching trend status again. Marc Jacobs Highliner is my favorite eyeliner of all time (yes, I just said that) and I think his teal shade, Ody(Sea) is the perfect product for rocking the teal liner.

7 Beauty Apps You Need to Download

Loreal-Make-Up-genius

I think the marriage of beauty and digital media is a wonderful thing. There are countless mobile apps on the market now that will do everything from let you try on celebrity hairstyles to connect you directly with a celebrity hairstylist. I’ve mentioned various apps on the blog before, but now I have curated a list of my current faves in one handy post. These tried and true beauty apps are definite keepers that I think you will love as much as I do. Behold, the seven beauty apps you need to download right now… (Seriously, start loading the App Store!)

GlamSquad

GlamSquad is like Uber for your beauty routine. Simply download the app, select the beautification service, and they will come to you (on location!) and pretty you up. GlamSquad offers a variety of predetermined hair and makeup looks (like “The Bombshell” and “The Siren”) to make your selection a snap. This service is super convenient and will save you time and money in traveling to your salon! Treat yourself like the star you are and have your beautification team come to you.

YouCam Makeup

Look a little washed out in your photo? Just add a little post-production blush with YouCam Makeup. (I suggest you use this one post-selfie-shoot, but pre-filtering.) It’s an app that uses facial recognition technology to digitally add makeup to your photos. It can look beautiful and natural when done correctly. It does look a little cheeseball if you go overboard, so please YouCam in moderation. Thankfully, each feature can be adjusted and does not have to be rendered at full intensity.

Beautified

Beautified, co-founded by DJ/model/fitness guru/professional cool person Hannah Bronfman, allows you to effortlessly book same day salon/spa services and fitness classes with the touch of a button. It features a well-curated list of providers, all displayed in a very user-friendly way with easily accessible info and pricing.

Sephora to Go

Sephora to Go is amazing. In addition to the traditional Sephora shopping we all know and love, the app features inspiration including shoppable looks! Look at a photo of one of your glammed up favorite influencers, and click to purchase the products she put on her face. It’s super easy and fun if shopping is your mission.

Glam Style

This amazing lifestyle app features a new edition every month, always packed with fun, relevant content. (You might remember when I participated in the Glam Beauty 100 with my #GlamFam and mentioned the app back then.) This month’s Valentine’s focused edition is definitely worth checking out!

L’Oreal Makeup Genius

THIS. This app is awesome. L’Oreal’s Makeup Genius scans your face in seconds then allows you to try on any shade (in real time!) and shop direct from your phone. The makeup library also features complete looks created by L’Oreal artists that you can try. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen the video of what it looks like in action. It’s brilliant.

Martinis and Mascara

Shameless self promotion alert! It felt wrong to not include the Martinis and Mascara app in my roundup of favorite apps. Chances are, if you’re reading this post right now, you’ll like it. ;)

Cezanne Hair Treatment Review

Cezanne

I recently ventured down to the gorgeous Danny Jelaca salon on South Beach to test out the new Cezanne Perfect Finish Keratin Smoothing Treatment, an amazing new smoothing system that’s 100% free of formaldehyde.

Danny-Jelaca-Salon

Master stylist Meredith Texeria, the lead smoothing treatment expert in the salon, applied my treatment. She was such a delight I was instantly obsessed with both her serious hair skills and her awesome personality. Sitting in her chair is like having a bestie that just happens to know how to perform magic on your hair.

photo_4(3)

The Cezanne hair treatment isn’t a quick process, but it’s well worth it. This system makes hair smoother, straighter and frizz-free while restoring natural shine and strengthening the hair. It sounds too good to be true, but I can tell you from experience that the treatment definitely lives up to the product claims! Here’s what I looked like before:

photo(14)

And here’s my after:

photo_2(6)

I am SO obsessed with my results! I also love that the treatment is so effective minus all of the harmful chemicals. Instead of formaldehyde, the formula uses a proprietary blend of keratin, silk protein, botanical extracts and vitamins that actually leaves hair healthier and more manageable than before the treatment. It feels like I got a new head of hair!

Another perk is that there is no “down time” after treatment. Hair can be washed or colored immediately. (Keep in mind that coloring right before the treatment can alter your color though!) Unlike other smoothing systems, hair can also be curled with a curling iron without harming the condition of the hair. Cezanne can be used on any hair type and texture, whether the hair is colored, damaged, bleached, or highlighted.

I definitely recommend this treatment to anyone who is seeking frizz-free locks! You won’t be sorry, trust me. :)

Stay Refreshed and Stylish this Summer with Bottled Starbucks® Iced Coffee

star2

Bathing suit? Check.

SPF 70? Check. (Seriously.)

Bottled Starbucks® Iced Coffee. Check!

I’m a firm believer that you don’t have to sacrifice style for time when you’re running around this summer! Stay refreshed and stylish with help from Bottled Starbucks® Iced Coffee, a blend of premium Starbucks coffee and 2 percent milk, inspired by the coffee blend and flavors used in the handcrafted Iced Coffee beverages served in Starbucks cafes.

It’s the perfect pick-me-up for those hot summer days when you’re running out the door and need to grab something in a hurry. I always keep one (or three!) in my beach tote along with my other summer beauty essentials.

star1

Here is my ultimate summer style on-the-go checklist:

  1. A bathing suit that makes you feel beautiful. Maybe yours is a string bikini. If so, more power to you! My power suit is a versatile black swim dress that I love to just throw on and go.
  2. Sunscreen. If you aren’t into the traditional kind, there are a ton of other lightweight serums infused with sunscreen that will absorb quickly and do the trick! Check out Supergoop. Love!
  3. A versatile hairstyling product. My fav for my beach bag? ARROJO protective thickening lotion. This multitasking spray protects hair from harmful UV rays and humidity while instantly thickening hair strands.
  4. Makeup setting spray. Urban Decay’s “Chill” is perfect for this. You can quickly spritz your makeup with it in the morning and it’ll stay on for hours – no matter how much you sweat or splash around in the water.
  5. Bottled Starbucks® Iced Coffee. Like I mentioned earlier, this stuff is my saving grace for staying energized on-the-go during the endless summer festivities! The Coffee + Milk variation is my favorite. You can purchase some of your own at your local grocery or drug store. It runs about $1.99 a bottle or $5.99 for a four pack. SBX_Iced_Coffee_sSrv_NEW

Bottled Starbucks Iced Coffee beverages are the perfect blend of premium Starbucks coffee and 2 percent milk. Available in four delicious offerings: Coffee + Milk, Low Calorie Coffee + Milk, Vanilla, and Caramel, Starbucks Iced Coffee ready-to-drink beverages are the perfect on-the-go refreshment to get you through the daily commute, big projects such as spring cleaning, or an exciting road trip with friends. Look for it at major grocery and convenience stores, available nationwide.
