Top Makeup Trends to Try in 2017

[Today’s post was written by a guest contributor.]

Prestige Cosmetics.

A new year is the perfect time to try out a fresh trend or two, and 2017 has no shortage of them—especially when it comes to makeup. This season, it’s all about extremes. You can choose between tons of sparkle, shine, and color or a barely-there approach that manages to be both natural and elegant. Whether you want to simply supplement your look or completely switch things up, give your beauty routine a boost by trying out one (or more) of these hot makeup trends.

Glossy Lips

The last few years might have been devoted to the matte lip, but 2017 is all about a high gloss look. From eyelids and cheekbones to that previously matte pout, this season’s makeup trends prove you don’t (necessarily) need highlighter to create a radiant look. As this article from Elle writes, lip gloss is a refreshing change that gives dimension, shine, and youth—all things that most of us can’t get enough of in our beauty routine. Swap out your go-to matte lip shade to a glossy version for an easy upgrade, or swipe on a clear gloss for a more subtle take on this season’s shine.

Glow Crazy

If there’s one thing that makeup artists, beauty editors, and average gals (like you and me) all have in common it’s that we just can’t get enough of glowing, lit-from-within skin—in fact, the brighter our skin, the better. Thankfully, this year’s makeup trends are in full support of our crusade for the perfect glow. For a fool-proof routine, use this video from The Scene as your guide to give yourself a glow inspired by Rihanna’s impeccable complexion. Start with MAC’s Diamond Cream Colour Base as your highlight (cheekbones, cupid’s bow, bridge of nose) and finish with a warm bronzing powder, because there’s no shine without a little shadow.

Glitter Overload

Love it or hate it, the glitter trend is still going strong. This year, however, heed the advice of Harper’s Bazaar and wear it in a less precise manner than before. Scatter it across your bottom lashline, allowing flecks to fall where they please. As counterintuitive as it might feel, the less perfect it looks the more perfect it actually is. If you just can’t bring yourself to continue the glittery eye trend, don’t worry—there’s still plenty of shimmer to go around elsewhere. Try glitter-dusted lips instead. Swipe on gloss over your lip color and lightly pat on glitter with your ring finger for a sparkly finish.

Bare Beauty

As promised, not every makeup trend in the new year is about glitz, shimmer, and shine. Rocking a natural look is just as popular (and arguably more sophisticated). To make your everyday makeup look as fresh and dewy as possible, this post from Glamour notes that it’s all in the details. Start with creamy matte skin and a bit of mauve lipstick blended with a brush on the cheeks and bridge of nose. Then, apply a soft taupe shadow on your eyelids and finish with a pinky-nude matte liquid lipstick, like Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid in Nude Flush, lightly dabbed onto lips as a stain.

How to Get the Perfect Pout

the-best-lip-products

Want the scoop on how to get perfect lips (sans Kylie Jenner level injections)? After testing out a million different product combos – seriously – I’ve discovered the formula for the perfect pout. Read on for my findings and get ready for the best lips of your life!

First thing’s first: A trusty lip scrub is an absolute must.

Prep your lips using an exfoliating lip scrub. It’s super easy to make your own with a combination of coconut oil and sugar, or you can be lazy like me and purchase one. I think the best lip scrub is LUSH’s Bubble Gum Lip Scrub, but there are several out there on the market that will get the job done.

I take it a step further by using the Bliss Pout-O-Matic lip-perfecting device for maximum exfoliation. A toothbrush or your finger will also work btw – I’m just an overachiever.

You can obviously do this anytime, but I incorporate this step into my nighttime skincare routine to prep for the most effective beauty sleep.

Mask it up.

Once you’ve scrubbed thoroughly, slather on a lip mask like Kaplan MD Lip 20 Peppermint Mask. This soothing gel mask gently removes chapped, flaky skin using papaya enzymes, while hydrating and repairing the delicate skin on your lips with marine collagen and hyaluronic acid. So, if the scrub left anything, rest assured this will get it taken care of and then some. It plumps the contours of the lips seamlessly and will leave them feeling and looking fab in 5 minutes or less.

Soften while you sleep.

It’s imperative to also make sure you’re hydrating your lips after you’ve exfoliated. So as the last step before bed, break out the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask and let the miracles continue while you get your beauty sleep. It’ll feel like a super thick lip balm in the best way. Apply an ample amount and let the magic happen.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Good morning, beautiful! At this point, you’ll wake up with amazing lips. However, don’t stop the hydration train just because you’ve woken up and look amazing. I keep several tubes of Image Skincare’s Ormedic Lip Complex scattered around my apartment, in my desk, my makeup bag, my purse… you get the picture. Get some and use it throughout the day to maintain that perfect pout.

Enjoy your pucker!

I swear to you, if you follow these steps your lips will never look better. Promise. Muah!

My New Favorite Denim Brand

slink-jeans

As you all know, I am a huge proponent of positive body image no matter what size you are! I’ve been very vocal about this on the blog which is why I am so excited to spread the news about one of my favorite new fashion brands – SLINK Jeans!

The SLINK philosophy totally aligns with mine and I love that there is finally a premium denim brand for curvy girls that stands for what I believe in. I believe that banishing body shame is essential and SLINK agrees. The brand name itself is an acronym for “sexy, lovable, intelligent, noticeable, and kind.” Love it.

The premium denim line is designed with an exclusive, curve-hugging technology, so the quality of the jeans is just as amazing as the brand’s body positive stance.

SLINK currently offers a range of curve-friendly sizes starting at size 10 and will soon expand to ALL sizes (0-24) because not all curves are created equal.

SLINK is also launching a beauty contest with an opportunity to win big in the next month, so be sure to follow SLINK on Instagram and Facebook to keep an eye out for more details on how you can enter to win.

Are you ready to join the body positive revolution with me? Shop SLINK at retailers like Nordstorm and Macy’s and be sure to stay tuned for more details on Martinis and Mascara about my new favorite brand!

Is Bioderma Worth the Hype?

img_0834

SO many people ask my opinion on cult classic beauty products, so I decided it’s time I start regularly dishing out my opinion on some of the OG beauty products everyone raves over! I do think that there are some that are as stellar as everyone in the blogosphere would have you believe… and others that, well, aren’t.

First up in my “Worth the Hype?” series is the heavily covered and equally coveted Bioderma. If you’ve been living under a rock, Bioderma is one of the most popular brands of micellar water (aka tiny balls of oil cleansing molecules suspended in soft water).

The brand’s popular Sensibio H2O claims to be the 1st and only dermatological micellar water perfectly compatible with the skin: its fatty acid esters, the constituent elements of micelles, are similar to the phospholipids of the skin cell membranes
and naturally help rebuild the skin’s hydrolipidic film. Additionally, French women love it and they really know their shit.

So… is it worth the hype? In a word, yes. It dissolves makeup instantly and leaves your skin feeling baby soft and super clean. I have super sensitive skin and have never had an issue with it breaking me out. However, I will say that I use it mostly in place of a makeup remover, at the first step of my cleansing routine, rather than in place of my other skincare products.

Some people prefer to use it as part of a one-and-done skincare routine, but I’m almost 30. My skin has NEEDS. I wear a LOT of makeup and I also am in a weird phase of life where my combination skin includes fighting both acne and wrinkles. Since I need extra weapons in my arsenal, I use it in conjunction with a combo of Jurlique and Image Skincare products. (More on my full routine later!)

Traditional Bioderma freaks would probably smite me for saying that, but I’m just being honest, folks. If you have relatively clear skin and don’t wear a ton of makeup, cleansing with Bioderma only would probably be perfectly fine. Also, I’m very jealous of you. 😉

Have you tried it yet? What are your thoughts? Would love to know if you agree! xoxo

How to Find the Best Red Lipstick

how-to-find-the-best-red-lipstick

The classic red lip is one of those timeless looks that’s wearable no matter what season it is. Red is a power color – and the right red can make a serious statement. We all know NARS Dragon Girl looks great on Taylor Swift, but what red lippie works best on you? Proper shade selection can be tricky, so here are a few tricks to keep in mind during your next trip to Sephora.

Fair skin

Bright bluish reds (like MAC’s Russian Red) look beautiful on fair skinned gals with pink undertones. Bonus points: Bluer reds will also make your teeth look whiter! If you are fair, but your skin has a little more of a yellow undertone, stick to warmer shades in the brick red department.

Medium skin

If you are more olive complected, orangey reds are more likely to flatter you. Bright tangerine reds (like YSL Orange Indie) will look lovely, so don’t be afraid to go bright! If your skin is a little more golden than olive, opt for a pinker coral color instead of a true orange.

Dark skin

Burgundy and wine shades (like this one) look absolutely beautiful with deep skin tones. Cherry reds look universally flattering on both cool and warm dark skin tones as well! As Coco Chanel once said, “The best color in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.” 😉
